Finished DeckThis deck for a home in San Rafael, CA presented some unique challenges.  The owners had experienced difficulty getting approval from the City of San Rafael after another designer prepared plans that proved deficient.  Master Builders of Marin redrew the plans and secured final approval for a building permit.

Following approval, we brought in equipment to drill deep piers to support the new deck.  Scaffolding was installed to construct the pressure-treated framework, and sustainably logged Cumaru decking was installed.  Cumaru is approximately five times as hard as oak, and it is extremely resistant to attacks from insects and fungal rot.

The railing was constructed using one-quarter inch  frosted tempered glass panels mounted with stainless steel supports to create a strong, beautiful railing that affords privacy while still preserving this home’s spectacular views.

A new sliding door was installed leading from the dining room to the deck to create easy, elegant access.  To finish off the project, the owners planted potato vines beneath the wire mess of the main supports.  This non-invasive vine provides light cover for the deck substructure, with wispy year-around greenery and small white flowers.
