I was fortunate to study on a graduate level (masters program) with ArchitectCamponile At Berkley Christopher Alexander at U.C. Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design.  Chris is a rather famous architect, internationally renowned for having resurrected the idea of the “Master Builder”—which refers to the traditional concept of architect/engineer/builder that prevailed until the early part of the twentieth century.

My company name, Master Builders of Marin, is derived from Christopher Alexander’s “Master Builder” concept, and I endeavor to put what I learned from him into practice.

Chris has authored several books that have been extremely influential, beginning in the 1970s and continuing through today:

  • The Timeless Way of Building
  • Pattern Language:  Towns, Buildings, Construction
  • The Oregon Experiment
  • A New Theory of Urban Design
  • The Nature of Order:  An Essay on the Art of Building and the Nature of the Universe , Books 1  through 4

Chris’ latest work, “Katarxis 3,” is published online.

Exceptional Quality At An Ordinary Price

I have always been a “hands-on” (rather than a gentleman) contractor—I am out there every day with my tool belt on, throwing around concrete and lumber and getting things done.  I work all the trades:  concrete and foundation work, framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, finish carpentry, tile work,  painting and other trades associated with home building.

Because nothing is lost in translation between the design and construction disciplines, this results in a highly efficient operation.  Master Builders of Marin offers exceptional quality at an ordinary price.   When bidding competitively, we usually come in mid-pack in terms of pricing, however no one beats our quality.
